Location |
|
| |
Beruwala, in the south western costal belt of Sri Lanka is a relaxed beach resort which attracts independent travelers and families alike. The name Beruwala is derived from the Sinhalese word Beruwala (the place where the sail is lowered). It marks the spot for the first Moorish settlement on the island, established by Arab traders around the 8th century CE. A large population of Sri Lankan Moors, many of them gem merchants, still live in this area, particularly in the "China Fort". The oldest mosque in Sri Lanka is Msjidul Abrar, built by Arabs in early years.Al- Fasiyatul Nasriya Muslim Malika Maha Vidyalaya is the first and oldest girls school in Sri Lanka. The school was damaged by the tsunami on boxing day in 2005.Beruwala is the starting point of a 130 km long stretch of beach. In the past few years great strides have been made in the field of resort development in this area. The bay is ideal for bathing almost the whole year round.
You can hire a boat to the lighthouse raised on a small island off-shore which offers an excellent view over the coast line. Just off the coast are coral gardens, making this the perfect spot for divers and snorkelers to view spectacular marine life. Beruwala harbour is an interesting place to watch the fishermen unload their catch. The harbour has over 400 boats, many of them quite sizeable and able to handle fishing trips of up to two month at sea. . |

Galapata Vihara
This temple dates back to the 12th century. It is no ordinary temple; legend claims it was built by a minister of Parakramabahu the Great (1153 -86 CE) who was responsible for most of the wonders at the medieval city of Polonnaruwa. The temple was linked by a maze of subterranean tunnels with all the other temples in the area - traces of which are still extant. Here, every January a perahera or procession is held on duruthu full moon day to honour the Buddha's first visit to the island. |

Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery
Kosgoda is famous for its turtle hatchery operated by the Wild Life Protection Society of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1981 to protect Sri Lanka's turtles from extinction. The hatcheries pay fishermen for eggs that they collect at night along the long sandy beach. Visitors are shown the huge tanks filled with new born but lively hatchlings. After being fed the hatchlings are taken to the sea and released when they are 2-4 days old. They are not always released during the safer hours of darkness. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs can be found at Kosgoda throughout the year |

Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is located on the south west coast of Sri Lanka, a short drive from Hotel Neptune.
It was affected by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. It is primarily a tourist destination, and serves as a great beach with options to surf, snorkel and enjoy the sun. You can also ride in a glass bottomed boat to view the coral gardens.
The town is arranged around the Galle-Colombo main road. It is a busy road with vehicles traveling at high speed; pedestrians and tourists are advised to exercise caution when crossing.
In the wake of the tsunami, many of the families who had lost everything were given sewing machines as part of the relief operations. As a result, the town has a plethora of tailors who will custom make shirts, pants, and shorts. It has become the place to go in Sri Lanka to have a Hawaiian shirt fitted and sewn.
The area also has a reputation for offering a vibrant nightlife.
Kaluthara
The Kalutara Basket Centre
Kalutara is famous for its colourful, soft basketry. At the Basket Centre in the middle of the village, the local weavers tame the unyielding palm fronds, turning them into purses, coasters, hats and other items. Then unyielding and stubborn thorny Watekeiyya palm leaves are skillfully transformed into patterned mats, purses, lampshades and linen baskets. Many other wares are woven from coconut fiber. |
